Why Tongues?

I would like to discuss 2 reasons why believers should pray in tongues.

Reason # 1: Speaking tongues was evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV)

1) When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven , as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3) Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

In Acts Chapter 1 vs 4-8, Jesus promised his disciples that they will receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. As see here in Acts Chapter 2, the disciples gathered together in the upper room to wait for this promise. They were in the upper room on one accord praying. While they praying and praising God, a sound came from heaven and they began to speak in other tongues.

It just wasn't Peter praying in tongues, but every person in that room began to speak in other tongues.

There is another encounter in the book of Acts where the tongues is evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:44-46 (NKJV)

44) While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45) And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46) For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

In Acts Chapter 10, there was a man named Cornelius who feared and prayed to God. Cornelius was not a Jew, but a Gentile. He didn't know much about Jesus Christ and what He did on earth. While Cornelius is praying, God gives him a vision about sending a man named Peter to tell him some good news about Jesus.

In the same Chapter, Peter who was Jesus disciple, was also praying and God gives him a vision about taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles. Peter decides to go to the home of Cornelius and preach about Jesus Christ and what He did on earth. As Peter is preaching, Cornelius and his household believed the Gospel. The Holy Spirit fell on all of them and they began to speak in other tongues.

Reason # 2: Praying in tongues is your Heavenly prayer language between you and God.

In 1 Corinthians 14:14 -15, Paul encourages Christians to pray in the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (NLT)

14) For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don't understand what I am saying. 15) Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.

What is Paul talking about here? If you go back to the beginning of the chapter, he is talking about speaking in tongues in a public setting, such as a church. If you are in a public setting and you are speaking in tongues, it does need interpretation. This doesn't mean you can't pray to God in tongues in your own private setting. Paul actually encourages you to pray in the spirit as well as words you understand. He encourages both.

Speaking in tongues is a gift that you can receive. Speaking in tongues doesn't save you or make you more spiritual. Salvation is based on what Jesus did for you on the Cross and His resurrection. Spiritual maturity is based on your relationship and fellowship with God.

God Bless!!!
